ISLE OF SKY NURSERY AND BOTANICAL GARDENS

With Summer rains and shorter days, it is time to start planning and preparing for early fall planting. Assess where shade-loving berries and flowers will get the maximum protection from brutal mid-day and afternoon sun. Plan to create shade and wind breaks before planting; there are many creative ways to do this quickly. Be sure to amend the planting area with plenty of organic matter. Though our native soil is generally a good basic soil type, it hovers near only 1% in organic matter. Lack of organic matter is our primary reason for plants failing to thrive. I use TerraPro, made in New Mexico by Soil Secrets LLC, which is a rich mix of humates and mycorrhizal fungi. Did you know that one molecule of humic acid holds 10,000 molecules of water? Mycorrhizal Fungi colonize the roots of plants and break down nutrients from the surrounding soil, making them bioavailable to the plant. This is especially beneficial with our heavy clay soil. Be sure to add plenty of FINISHED compost into the planting site. Then, after planting, top dress with 3” or more of pine bark and needle mulch well out beyond the farthest branches of trees and shrubs. In addition to aiding water retention, mulch helps to lower soil surface temperatures. Reflected heat from bare ground can reach brutally high temperatures. If it’s tough on your bare feet, think how the plant is struggling. These are a few of the things I do in the garden at Isle of Sky Nursery. Come see the results. I have a nice selection of dwarf heirloom apple trees, seabuckthorn berries, black currants, blackberries and goji berries as well as many perennial flowering herbs. Visit the Isle of Sky Nursery and Garden and plan for your fall planting. Open Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 9 am to 5 pm at 174 White Oaks Canyon Road, White Oaks.
